The Merchant Marine Vietnam Service Bar was established by Public Law 822 on July 8, 1965 to recognize service by Merchant Marines in Vietnamese waters between July 4, 1965 and August 15, 1973. The Merchant Marine Decorations and Medals Act of May 30, 1988 authorized the corresponding Medal.
