The Merchant Marine Mediterranean Middle East War Zone Bar was established May 10, 1943 and was issued for service in the area including the Mediterranean Sea, the Red Sea, the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean west of 80 degrees east longitude. On May 30, 1988, the Merchant Marine Decorations and Medals Act was passed allowing the design of the Medal to correspond to the bar.
