The Gallant Ship Unit Citation ribbon was established by Executive order 9472 on August 29, 1944. It was awarded to each member of a ship which serves in a gallant manner in marine disasters and other emergencies, or in an outstanding manner against enemy attack. A silver seahorse device is attached to the ribbon for the first and subsequent awards, although no ship has earned more than one award.
