Guard Alcatraz Prison Badge

Guard Alcatraz Prison Badge story inside the box:

Maximum Security Federal Prison - 1934-1963

Alcatraz was designed to hold prisoners who caused trouble at other federal prisons.  Visitors had to be earned and no original letters were to be delivered to prisoners, instead they received a typed copy. Newspapers, magazines, radios, and other forms of entertainment were all prohibited. There were no regular scheduled meetings of a parole board.

Its first warden was James A. Johnston who hand picked his staff and chose only men with federal prison system experience.  Alcatraz opened with 52 guards on the payroll.

Alcatraz housed some of the most notorious and ruthless prisoners of its time including Al Capone, Alvin Karpis, Machine Gun Kelly, Basil “The Owl” Banghart, and Mickey Cohen.
