Running from Chicago to Santa Monica, it was the only road to connect small towns with large metropolitan cities. Route 66 ushered in the development of tourism, as it was one of the original sites for motels, filling stations, and motor courts. In 1946, Nat King Cole released “Get Your Kicks On Route 66”, creating a slogan for the American motorist.
